The profile of a crow skull was used as the primary reference for the general shape of the scythe blade. The blade was initially carved out of 1" polystyrene foam.

The foam was sanded down to the exact contours that the final product would be. The more precise the foam core is modeled, the less sanding and patching will need to be done later.
Woven fiberglass was laid over the foam model and sealed with epoxy resin.
The fiberglass was laid over one side of the blade in a single sheet. Always use a single sheet if possible, then there wont be any seams to patch later.

After both sides were fiberglassed, The entire blade was sealed with ultralite bondo (auto body filler) Bondo can be sanded to a glass-like finish. For this piece the blades were sanded smooth and the body left textured. To finish, more texture was added by painting on chopped fiberglass and resin. The blades were surfaced with mylar. Then everything was painted and highlighted with rub n' buff.
